In his unique brand of self-described “Africadian” poetry, George Elliott Clarke explores a personal subject: his great-aunt Portia White. The result is a stirring epic, vibrating with music that spans White’s birth in 1911, her upbringing against the backdrop of two World Wars, and her life-long love of music, from directing the Cornwallis Street Baptist Church choir to her command performance before Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1964. Mr. Clarke will read from this new book, illuminate his writing process and tell more of his family’s story. Books will be for sale prior to the event with reception and signing to follow.
