George Borden

George began writing poetry in 1973 and ten years later branched out into gospel song writing.

George has published three books of cultural poetry accounting the black experience from Africa to Nova Scotia. He placed first in a National Black Poetry Competition in 1997 and was runner-up in an open national poetry contest in 1997.

George's published works have appeared in numerous anthologies, historical periodicals, documentaries, journals and newspapers. He has two dramatic reading creations to his credit, the birth of Christ as told in The Christmas Story, and the passion as told in The Easter Story.

George was an active participant in the Writers in the Schools program for a number of years. He served on the WFNS Board of Directors as a committed and contributing member.

For four years, George wrote extensively for former black newspapers/newspapers, including Ebony Express, Black Horizon, Black Focus, RAP, Contrast, The Preserver, Afro News and Kola.

The Easter StoryGeorge's poetry may be ground in such widely read books as Canada's Black Battalion by Calvin Ruck, Ontario's High School History Text, and William Hall by Bridglal Pachai. He has set his poem The Black Soldier's Lament to music and had it sung for the first time at the 93rd Black Battalion Annversary Celebration 2009.

George has submitted a seven poem complimentary booklet to the NS/NU Legion Command Headquarters to consider as a handout at the 2010 Seniors' Expo.

George has donated his personal collection of cultural focused books, texts, pamphlets and magazines to the Birchtown Black Loyalist Heritage Museum to help replace their original inventory which was destroyed by a fire a few years ago.

George continued to add to his extensive inventor of poems totaling more than four hundred titles on every subject under the sun.
