Susan Atkinson-Keen was born and raised in Montreal, and educated as a geologist (B.Sc., Sir George William's University, Montreal, M.Sc., Acadia University, research, John Hopkins University, Baltimore). She spent ten years working as a field geologist across Canada as well as in Iceland, Scotland, and the Central Appalachians, and has worked as a geological museum exhibit interpreter. She now lives in Halifax with her three children. Susan turned to fiction writing in 1981.
