The shortlists for the 13 different book prizes comprising the 2018 Atlantic Book Awards were announced at a press conference held at Halifax City Hall on Monday, March 26. The nominated titles represent a wide range of books from Atlantic Canada—everything from history to kids’ books. The full shortlist is below.

Multiple award nominees include writer Joan Baxter with four nominations for her controversial look at Pictou County’s Abercrombie Mill, The Mill: Fifty Years of Pulp and Protest (Pottersfield Press); journalist Pauline Dakin for Run, Hide, Repeat:  A Memoir of a Fugitive Childhood (Viking Canada); Sarah Faber (All is Beauty Now) and novelist Carol Bruneau for A Bird on Every Tree (Nimbus Publishing/Vagrant Press).

The Awards will be given out in Paul O’Regan Hall, Halifax Central Library, on Thursday, May 10 at 7:00 p.m. This year’s Pioneer Award will also be awarded to someone from Nova Scotia who has made a substantial contribution to the literary life of the region.

New this year, the Atlantic Book Awards Society is pleased to announce that the three awards provided by the Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia will be given at this year’s Atlantic Book Awards Gala.  Those awards comprise the Thomas Raddall Atlantic Fiction Award (valued at $25,000), the J.M. Abraham Poetry Award (valued at $2,000) and the Evelyn Richardson Non-Fiction Award (valued at $2,000).

The region’s book publishers are represented on the shortlist with 21 of the 39 nominations going to books published by Atlantic publishers. Nova Scotia’s Pottersfield Press leads with five nominations, and Nimbus Publishing and Goose Lane Editions (New Brunswick) each have three nominations. Other regional publishers include Fernwood Publishing and Roseway (NS), Breakwater Books and Killick, Running the Goat Books and Broadsides (NL), Gaspereau Press (NS) and Acorn Press (PEI).

Alexander MacLeod and Donna Morrissey, last year's winner of the Thomas Raddall Atlantic Fiction Award, announced the nominated authors for the Atlantic Book Awards.
