Lorri Neilsen Glenn

Lorri Neilsen Glenn is a poet and nonfiction writer. She is the author of four poetry collections including Lost Gospels (Brick, 2010) and author/editor of six academic books. Currently she is editing a collection of poetry and prose about mothers of the 1950s and finishing a manuscript of essays on grief and loss. Lorri was Halifax Regional Municipality’s Poet Laureate for 2005-2009.

Her work has been published in a number of Canadian and international journals including CV2, Room of One's Own, The Malahat Review, Grain, Event, Prairie Fire, and The Antigonish Review, Studio, The Society, and Nth position, as well as a number of anthologies including Dropped Threads 3, Slice Me Some Truth, Dance the Guns to Silence: Poems for Ken Saro-Wiwa, Madwoman in the Academy, White Ink, and Common Magic.

Raised on the prairies, Lorri has lived in Halifax since 1983 and now divides her time between Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan. She is Professor of Literacy and Literacy Studies at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, has been author in residence at St. Peter's College in Saskatchewan, and scholar-in-residence at three universities in Australia and New Zealand and at the University of Saskatchewan. She has taught writing in over 50 organizations across Canada, organized and led writing retreats in Ireland and Australia, and currently leads workshops in poetry and life writing (memoir) locally and nationally.

As Poet Laureate, Lorri created the youth poetry group, Wordfishing, with Halifax teacher Shaun Sheehan. The group's CD and chapbook will be published in 2008-2009. She has also worked with the Halifax Regional Library to host several "Poetry in Many Languages" events showcasing new Canadians who bring poetry from their first language to read to the audience. As a poet laureate, Lorri has also toured Canada, held workshops, given talks, and had the opportunity to work with writers of all ages.

Lorri is a member of several writers' organizations such as the Writers' Union of Canada, Pen Canada, the SWG, and the League of Canadian Poets, and has served a four-year term on the Board of the WFNS. She is currently on the Board of Governors at Mount Saint Vincent University.
